Using domperidone to increase milk production

Many mums want to breastfeed their newborns but are sometimes unable to. Sometimes this is due to medical problems or lack of breast milk. What is domperidone?

Domperidone is an antidopaminergic drug that is used to help suppress vomiting and ease nausea. It is usually highly recommended for patients with gastrointestinal problems, but it has also been found to increase lactation in new mums. Domperidone contains the hormone prolactin which is responsible for causing the extra lactation.

What are the effects of domperidone?

All medications have side effects. With domperidone one of the side effects is lactation. Domperidone contains the hormone prolactin, which will increase the production of milk. The most common side effects of using this drug is abdominal cramps and dry mouth. Prolonged use by many mums have reported symptoms of sleeplessness, loss of appetite and anxiety.

Is it safe to use domperidone to increase milk production?

There have been not studies that show any ill side effects to the mum or baby when using domperidone to increase milk production. This drug has been used in many countries for a few decades now with great results. Domperidone may not have been made for this particular application, but the effects of not using it outweigh this fact. Breastfeeding is a healthy practice essential for good nutrition for baby and even keeping you in shape. Not to mention, it’s a great time for you and your little one to bond.

The only warning that has been advised is to monitor your babies sodium level. Using too much domperidone has soon to raise a child’s sodium level too high. When you use it only as prescribed this will not happen.
