It’s been quite a while since I’ve had the luxury of spending a relaxing afternoon in a nice, quaint café. Since becoming a mum nearly 2 years ago, my weekends are mostly spent at indoor playgrounds and places that offer child-friendly activities and facilities.
So when my mum friends suggested that we meet up for a ‘mums-only’ lunch date at Artisan Boulangerie Co. (ABC) on Killiney Rd, it didn’t take me long to reply to their text message with a “Count me in!”.
ABC Bakery has several outlets in Singapore, and I’ve actually passed by their cafe at Asia Square a few times during my work lunch break.
For this lunch date with my mum friends, we decided to head down to ABC Bakery on Killiney Road, as the centralised location makes it easier for all of us to travel there from work or home.
As we arrived at the start of the lunch hour, half of the tables at the café were already filled up. Most of the diners were the working crowd from offices nearby, and towards the later part of the afternoon, I saw some mothers coming in with their kids after picking them up from the preschool around the block.
If you’re looking to spend some quality me-time at ABC Bakery on Killiney Road, I’d highly recommend that you get a table by the full-length windows which look out towards the street.
As this sitting area is quite far away from the main food counter, you won’t be disturbed by the chatter of the other diners and the service staff.
ABC Bakery serves a variety of baked goodies – from morning pastries and a selection of freshly baked breads and pretzels to sandwiches, salads, quiches and pies. They also have a good selection of coffee, latte, bottled drinks and freshly squeezed juice.
As I’m a huge bread lover, I enjoyed trying out the different types of freshly baked bread – which we shared among the 4 of us. According to the chef, they use only the best flour to make their breads and pastries, which is especially imported all the way from a traditional flour mill in France!
Make sure to save some space for their yummy sweet pastries! My top favourites were the Vanilla Twist (a twisted pastry stick with rock sugar bits) and the Mixed Fruit Tart.
Is it child-friendly?
ABC Bakery is definitely a child-friendly place, as there are high chairs and kids’ cutlery available for parents who come with their kids. What’s more, you can also order a Babyccino for your little ones – for FREE!
If you’re wondering what a Babyccino is, it’s essentially a mini cup of pure, frothed full cream milk made especially for kids. You can opt to have it with a sprinkle of cocoa powder on top.
This is something I’ll definitely order for my daughter when I bring her along to ABC Bakery next time.
The pies and quiches at ABC Bakery are priced from $6 up; a loaf of artisan bread starts from $7.50. Desserts such as the tarts and eclairs range from $4.50 to $8.
I’d say the average bill for 2 people with a salad, sandwich/savoury pastries (i.e. pies and quiches), drinks and a shared dessert will come up to approximately $50.
We didn’t have to wait long for our food and drinks to come, and service was pretty good. So if you’re looking for a place to grab a quick bite, or if you’re thinking of having something light for lunch (or tea time), ABC Bakery could be a great option to consider.
If you’re coming in during the peak lunch hours, it is best to make a reservation beforehand. One of my friends happened to walk past one weekend afternoon and, according to her, the place was packed!
I’ll be listing down the address and contact numbers for each ABC Bakery outlet at the end of this article.
As ABC Bakery is a casual café/bakery, you do not have to dress up too much. Just put on a nice and comfortable sun dress or a jeans-and-tank top combo – and you’re good to go.
Good to know info
On top of the usual menu, ABC Bakery also has a Platters Menu – which is like a delivery/take-away service that lets you order food for home or office parties.
The ABC Platters Menu features tasty finger foods such gourmet pastries, sandwiches, salads and desserts. Orders must be placed 2 days in advanced, and you can either choose to have them delivered to your home or collect from any of ABC Bakery’s 5 outlets.
I think this a perfect idea for occasions like baby’s full month or first birthday. It’s a refreshing change from the usual catering fare and saves you the trouble of preparing your own party food (and dealing with the tiring clean-up after that).
