5 breastmilk recipes for mum and dad

Expressed breastmilk can pretty much be used in any recipe that calls for milk. Its rich, cream like taste has been known as a great substitute for creamer, and a tasty addition to ice cream and many a baby puree recipe.

Bread starter

A bread starter is the base for many artisan breads like sour dough. The harvested yeast culture creates a greater flavour and texture to the bread that can't be made using a commercial yeast.

2 1/2 cups warm breastmilk
1 tbsp active dry yeast
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tbsp sugar

1. Soften the yeast in 1/2 cup of the breastmilk.
2. Stir in the rest of the breastmilk, along with the flour and sugar.
3. Cover the mixture with a clean, dry tea towel and leave to stand in room temperature until bubbly.This can take up to ten days, depending on how warm the room is.
4. Stir the mixture two to three times a day.
5. The mixture will develop a strong smell as it becomes fermented.
6. To keep the starter going, stir in a teaspoon of sugar every ten days.
