Who is Zhu Sheng Niang Niang?
Zhu Sheng Niang Niang (注生娘娘) is the Taoist deity that is believed to protect pregnancy, delivery and the health of newborns. Her name translates to “the one who watches over birth.” It’s believed that Zhu Sheng Niang Niang is in charge of choosing parents for the souls ready to be reincarnated.
Her figure is usually shown holding an open book and a calligraphy brush. She has several assistants, including Hua Gong Hua Po who oversees delivery, and up to 72 nannies who watch over newborn babies up to the age of 12. Zhu Sheng Niang Niang watches over all babies and young children, so she is also the right deity to pray for the health of a premature baby or a sick baby.

There are many Taoist temples who have shrines dedicated to Zhu Sheng Niang Niang, but the most popular among couples is the Liang Shan Shuang Lin Temple in Toa Payoh, which is renowned for having a high success rate.
