The iPad and baby generation: Communication
One thing good about the technological environment is that the iPad baby has almost limitless information at his or her fingertips. Perhaps you will have already witnessed it with babies casually surfing Youtube for different versions of their favourite nursery song. This is great, as children who like to learn have so much at their disposal.
They are also able to communicate instantaneously anywhere in the world. This is a nice thing if you have family living overseas—they need not be a stranger to your child if they know what to use Skype, Google Hangout or Whatsapp.
The flip side of that, of course, is that there are a lot of dangers on the internet. Misinformation abounds, and so does temptation like addictive online games and pornography. Cyberbullying is the new standard in bullying that unfortunately can be invisible to parents.
Are you raising an iPad baby?
As parents of the iPad baby generation, it is definitely not too early to think about how you want to raise your baby. Avoiding all technology is not the answer since all babies will need to be digital natives to survive in tomorrow’s world.
But starting from now, parents will need to set boundaries when it comes to how their babies are allowed to use gadgets like the iPad and smartphone apps—and rules about how often and how long they get to use them.
