Why do women shake after giving birth?

After the pain of labour subsides, you’ll probably feel exhilarated – rightly so as you meet your baby for the very first time. In spite of the joy and elation, you might be surprised to find you are shaking after giving birth – some women refer to it as shivering from head to foot, even on the hottest summer day!

In fact, uncontrollable tremors and shaking after giving birth is completely normal, and happens to most women. It does not matter whether you had a vaginal or Caesarean delivery, with or without the help of an epidural. The shivering sensation can begin towards the end of your labour and could last up to a few hours after.

Shaking after giving birth is no cause for concern. While it may be uncomfortable, there aren’t any risks to you but knowing what causes it will help to put your mind at ease.
