What is not normal?
There are some diaper indications that will point out if your baby is feeling poorly or not taking in enough food.
- Poop should not be filled with a watery, blood-like mucous. It can point to signs of an allergy or infection, but discuss it with your doctor as soon as possible.
- Solid, hard and dry stools usually means that your baby is constipated – a common ailment in infants.
- Infrequent bowel movements where your baby is not gaining weight. This usually means that baby is not getting enough to eat. If you are breastfeeding, it might mean that your milk let down is not strong enough.
- If his stools are almost black, aside from the first day, it can be a sign of iron deficiency.
This scoop on poop is only a rough indication on what to expect, and there will still be many more surprises in store for you. As you get to know your baby, you will become acquainted with his bowl movements, and discover what is normal for your baby, and what is not. Always trust your instincts, and if you feel that something is not right with your baby, it is always safer to check with your doctor or midwife.
