The day has come when you can finally bring your premature baby home after some time in the neonatal intensive care unit. You’re filled with joy and trepidation . At the same time, you ask yourself – How are you going to care for your tiny, delicate preemie?
First of all, you should know that your baby is ready to come home. Your hospital will not discharge your preemie until he has gained enough weight and is strong enough to breathe and feed without aid. That said, your preemie will still need some TLC, so here are 6 tips for caring for a premature baby at home.
1. Keep germs away
Preemies are especially vulnerable to bacteria and infections because their immune systems haven’t developed fully. So before bringing baby home, scrub the home thoroughly. Make it a habit to wash your hands and change your clothes before touching your baby. It is also best not to have visitors for the first few months until your baby has had the first round of jabs.
