Your pregnancy week by week: Week 10

After 9 weeks, we take a look at your baby’s neural development during week 10 of your pregnancy and talk about choosing a suitable gynaecologist and hospital for the big day.

How your foetus is developing during pregnancy week by week:

Your baby is now about the size of a prune. Paddle-like, or webbed, hands and feet will now separate into fingers and toes, bones will begin to harden and his kidneys are now producing urine.

His liver and intestines also start functioning by themselves around this time. Your baby’s brain is also developing at astounding rates — nearly 250,000 neurons are forming every minute!

What you can do right now:

Mummies, you might have already had your first visit with the obstetrician/gynaecologist. If your husband was not present then, it would be a good idea to ask him to accompany on the second visit so that he can have a better idea of what will happen next. It would also be a great time to decide which hospital you would want to have your baby. You can consider taking maternity ward tours at various Singapore hospitals such as Raffles Hospital and Thomson Medical Centre.

What you should eat during first trimester of pregnancy:

1) Bananas – this will help with your nausea. Bananas are a good source of Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Fibre and Pottasium.

2) Spinach – Spinach is full of folate which is necessary to prevent birth defects of the brain and spinal cord.

3) Beans – this will help with your constipation. Beans are also a rich source of protein, folate and iron.

4) Red capsicum – Red capsicums (bell peppers) are a rich source of Vitamin C, which is needed for the growth and repair of tissues in your body. 1 large capsicum will contain about 209 mg of Vitamin C, which is about 3 times the amount in an orange.

Additional advice from our pregnant.sg mummy community:

Christina Jiayi: You must start taking folic acid. Please visit a gynae if haven’t done so.

Joey Ng: Have a balanced diet. More vegetables and fruits. Cut down on coffee, tea, and soft drinks. Stay happy and relax.

Susan Choo: Folic acid, EPADHA, balance diet, and ample rest.

Josse Joyce Tan: Raspberry leaf and nettle leaf tea daily after 1st trimester to strengthen uterus. I am drinking the tea now. Am 11 weeks. Available online from iherb.com. Can use discount code CVL231 for extra $10 off.
